that took about two years to two years
and I was born in London but none has
changed so much

anymore

people who've spent their whole lives
waiting for you to arrive and tell their
story and there are some people who have
the last thing they want is to tell
their lives - to a journalist and I
found so many people were happy to share
their stories and were shocked and often
with very poor people they've never they
never had the chance to sort tell the
stories of their lives so you can get
these quite magical experiences of
people piecing things together with you
for the first time yes if you read your
book and you you imagine what it must
have been like also for you to go in the
streets and to sleep there and there's
also fear these people very often they
live in fear the book begins in High
Park Corner and High Park corner is one
of the richest as golden streets in the
world it's next to the homes of Russian
oligarchs and Qatari sheiks
but unknown to them in the underpass
underneath the roundabout sleep Romanian
beggars who are in fear of being stabbed
in fear of being attacked and who are
the invisible people of the new London
so I went and I kind of lived with them
and was treated like a backup myself by
the passing English and wealthy
superclass and what was it like to be to
be a beggar yourself
I mean people looking at you like that
they is people look at you with eyes
that burn you and no one looks at you
neutrally people look at you with hate
or with pity so it's a constant
experience of emotional glares but
mostly it was the experience of being
invisible yeah I found that as people
became drunker the situation became more
dangerous every night and then
frequently you would get abuse and I
found the most generous people with
money
were African men I think because they
understood what it meant to be poor
they were the African men were the most
generous yes the English the British
didn't give you anything the most
aggressive were English women really how
why just shouting and what the day what
did they call you you can say anything

there is a in fact a whole illegal City
in London you say 600,000 people minimum
are illegal that's a city larger than
Glasgow you say the way that the visa
system works in the UK is we check
people on the way when they arrive we
don't check if they go and there has
been a massive growth in primarily
African visa over stairs and I wanted to
find out what life was like with these
people so I befriended the hospital
carers who helped the English die I
befriended the cleaners who make sure
the office is clean and the tube Pickers
you pick up trash in the underground and
I found a whole parallel city an
enormous city of third-world labour
conditions where they for them because
they're illegal you can pay them
whatever you want because they don't
have any rights and I found in the
villages of Africa London glows the
promise of a city of transformation you
can come and you've got this chance to
be something else but mostly these
people were living very crushed dreams
yes yes this book maybe is a book about
shattered dreams because when they come
to to London they think that's that's
the place to be it's like if I can make
it there I can make it anywhere London
is two dreams in the villages of Africa
Asia and Eastern Europe one is this this
dream of transformation and I found in a
I found a sort of Afghan community of
young men that were telling me that in
one of their valleys in Afghanistan
there is a particular area of London
called needs demand people dream of it
as this sort of golden utopia the way
that Englishman used to dream of America
in 19th century and only to arrive and
find things were definitely not the case
so it's the dream of change and the
other dream is sexual freedom and when
you one of the beauties of London I
think it's much stronger than New York
or or Paris or Berlin is the mix that's
happening and everywhere you go in
London you see Nigerian polish couples
you see Somali Russian couples and
coming from the conservative societies
that surround Europe it's incredibly
beautiful experience to come and choose

Afghanistan people's lives are dominated

development in these villages which is
TV and these peasants these farmers
watch TV and they see these images of
bathrooms and dancing American pop stars
and soap operas about London or Germany
and they know that there's this other
world and they dream in this very
unclear way of the land where there are
fast cars and jackets and parties and
these young men begin this journey ready
to risk everything to enter that other
world yes when they get there it's all
disappointment when they get there to
London they find a slightly unnerving
City where work on low pay appears to be
ethnically segregated polish builders
where only polish is spoken on most of
London's construction sites Eastern
European girls clean the homes African
women clean the offices and many
Africans are suspicious that's because
the English don't want Africans touching
their their stuff they find a
we're Muslim men do taxi driving and
they wonder have they come to a place
where there's a pecking order of
segregation yeah at some point in your
book you say suddenly I realized these
are the new slaves is it that bad one of
the attract the untold stories of mass
immigration to Europe is debt it costs a
lot of money to come from Afghanistan to
to London from Somalia to London and
even from Romania to London and when
these people arrive they are have to pay
back the debt for an Afghan to get to
London it costs about ten thousand
pounds which is a lot more in
Afghanistan than it is in London so it's
equivalent taking on a mortgage these
guys find themselves trapped in a black
economy where they're not paid minimum
wage unable to pay that debt back and
all their money's going on the debt so
they can never begin building to save up
for a house to sort of kickstart their
lives so they aren't debt slaves that's
what you what you write about to when
you're sleeping there in this in this
tunnel near Hyde Park I think and
suddenly at night in the dark there are
the enforcers with the Roma beggars the
in Romania they haven't been allowed
certain documents because of racism and
they can't get bank accounts so when the
harvest fails they fell into debt and
loan enforces took their children and
went you've got to pay to pay back our
debt 100 percent interest you're going
to go begging in London so a begging
gang makes a lot of money 20 beggars
like the ones that I live with they can
make ten thousand pounds a month if
everyone earns 20 pounds a day and every
night in the tunnel the enforcers come
collect the money and send it back to
the boss and they're off again now
there's some criticism also on your book
that you focus too much on the misery
and maybe there are also migrants who
are lucky you are successful I find that
in so many stories in this book of
stories of transformation an illegal
immigrant who ended up a policeman a
girl who arrived from Poland working a
kebab shop and any other
a registrar a Nigerian woman who became
a teacher a but a guy from Poland who
came with no money and now is a
multi-million struction boss and I think
they're very sort of elite Englishmen
who reviewed the book didn't quite
appreciate that a construction boss
who's a multi-millionaire is a success
even if he gets his hands dirty does it
does it bother you does it irritate you
this this criticism is slightly but I
think it's snobbish because you went in
the streets for two years and they I
don't know what you saw I think they're
their idea of success is well no one in
the book went to Oxford and no one in
the book is writing for the Guardian so
and I think these people are very
successful on their own terms
yeah construction boss is much more
successful than me he owns three houses
two companies wealthy man okay when we
think of London here we think of
beautiful buildings of cannery bar for
money restaurants how come we missed
this picture that that you're painting I
think there has been in Britain a
decline of reporting there's too much
colonists and there's too much
statistics and I think that these sort
of elite media is in this bubble of
writing columns and tweeting numbers and
they've missed the complete
transformation going on below I also
think that in England there's this idea
that the aristocracy of journalism
should be foreign correspondent and to
pick up on these themes at which your
empire that we were discussing earlier
yeah and it's viewed as not very
interesting to report about sort of the
poor or to report about the you know
police or crime so I think there's a
snobbish element there yeah well you to
wear a workers belt and correspondent a
foreign correspondent yes and you're the
kind of correspondent who decides to
stay close to home this time because
close to home is where it's happening I
think that London is a kind of very very
very new place but in my grandparents
were Jewish immigrants to London and
they arrived in a city where 2.6 percent
of people were immigrants like them just
before
world war two today discounting illegals
40% of London are immigrants and the
majority of the population are
immigrants or their children or their
grandchildren a totally new culture
completely new city and is this is this
a exclusively British problem
I think London's the city of Europe's
future and I think that with the waves
of migration coming from Africa and Asia
and South America as well - to Europe
all major European cities will look like
London I think the question is will they
look as unequal as London yes and but if
if you read your book and it's not a
happy story that you're that you're
telling in general what is this what you
would call an explosive situation
potentially what surprised me is the
London of secularism the London of Karl
Marx of empty churches of Anglican
vicars who don't believe in God as
Ravana shhhht in this new London where
only 45% of people are white British is
a very religious city a city of basement
massed city of Nigerian churches in old
bingo halls and everywhere I went
asking people their stories prayer very
quickly came through not once I meet
people who talked about politics when
George Orwell who was my inspiration was
doing down-and-out he met a lot of
people who believed in that socialism
would offer some answers but I found
London today a lot more like the London
of Dickens in the 19th century where the
poor don't see any help coming from
politics they only find it in God yes so
they're praying I think it's a city of
powerlessness and that was my my sadness
leaving the journey but if if prayer is
the only escape they have that's that's
in fact what you say does that frighten
you or does it worry you or what what's
your next step
what fright what frightens me is just
the complete lack of knowledge about
London by a lot of the political class
so if you just come out of Westminster
you come out of heritage London and you
go to the big construction you
where people pick up materials for
building you will see hundreds of guys
from Romania and from Poland from the
Baltic touting for work the vans come up
and they have to barter how much they're
paid no insurance no minimum wage and I
went out and touted for work for them
like one of them and the lowest wage I
ever saw was one chicken and chips at
the end of four days four days work and
that worried me yes there's a whole
parallel third-world labour market in
London now what you're saying in fact is
that that the political class and also
the elite journalists who criticize your
book they don't know what's going on I
mean there's not enough reporting and
there's not enough reporting at home and
there's an idea that everything is as it
used to be and there's not there's not
enough investment in kind of going out
and really reporting from the streets no
because that's numerous times you say
that in your book I have to see
everything for myself I don't trust
statistics I think that there's a
rationing of nice silver in Europe then
it's it's not a real article if it
doesn't have for statistics in it and
for me it's not a real article it
doesn't have a human story in it if it
doesn't have real people with real
voices so you found those real people
and those those voices but in fact you
found a story that frightens you it did
what was inequalities frightening and
what I found time and time again were
the stories of African kitchen boys who
were waiting the tables of the rich
thinking that the gap the jump between
them was unbridgeable I found listen to
the stories of the Polish cleaners in
the houses of the rich who sometimes
when they're arranging Madame's bed
think never be able to have a house it's
an it's impossible we are the servants
and they are the Masters okay but in
fact what you're telling us about this
is the phenomenon of a arrival city yes
like New York was for some time ago and
maybe still is like many other cities
maybe are isn't it also a natural
phenomenon which can
leads to prosperity also for these
people who are coming to this big city
maybe not now but maybe in 10 or 20
years well it's an ancient story of
coming to the city in the dream of the
city and the city of dreams changes and
I feel that New York is less of a city
of dreams in London is much much more
for migrants in the 21st century with
the Afghans in my book they repeatedly
told me where we live it's rubbish of
London but it's a peace beauty in the
world and that here we may have be paid
very badly but there's nobody going
around the Kalashnikov going to shoot us
if he's having a bad day so it isn't
that bad at all
London is tough but home is tougher yeah
uuuugh just mentioned the gap and these
people to gap between rich and poor the
people cleaning and the people driving
the Bentley's is it bridgeable the
people I went on I met on this journey
don't think it is so that's not a very
helpful message I'm not a politician
the book is their stories and their
senses and I found a world in London of
poverty where the British state in
questions and politics seem so distant
you you you mentioned in the book that
you don't know if you love or hate this
city that you didn't recognize anymore
you were born born in London do you know
by now did you decide do you still love
London or hate it the thing that I found
very moving was this mix and that doing
this story I realized that if you live
in London and you want to have children
and grandchildren in London over a 70%
chance that your children or
grandchildren will be mixed race or
mixed religion or mixed ethnicity and I
found the story now doesn't have very
much to do with me the polish builder
the African cleaner the Imam but if I
live in London that story will probably
be the story of my granddaughter all my
grandson just as much as mine is so I
felt I was listening to the future
discover
the future of my family through this
project and the thing I do love about
London compared to New York is it is the
city of mix there's incredible mixing
happening and I think that London in a
way is a culture about to happen this is
