does this band exist how long do you
play together well that's well I say so
greg joined us on the US tour for like
half of it that was in July or June July
so this is like maybe gig number four
that you've done with oh yeah man
that was what this gig number four and
then down in Sam have been with me for
much much longer
yeah yeah you're belonging or what they
call the young British jazz explosion
well thank you you're a young young
player sir I'm gonna ask you something
mr. spiro but you're from the United
States so you're not belonging to the
British Jessica cago dubia I we saw
already a lot of people of that scene
but but you were already in Belgium but
this is the first big gig I think I feel
like we've been here maybe twice but
that's not so important but they were
they were important gigs to me yeah of
course you really got the crowd to with
you today I felt that it was very very
lovely you like to build up the numbers
the compositions slowly with repeated
phrases and then you go
to a climax with the with the that's
fabulous ridden through your life I
guess we do yeah attention to Renee's
that's well that's how we roll as a
saxophone player you have a you have a
really strong heavy sound thank you
where does that come from
I mean where does anyone sound come from
I guess everyone I've ever listened to
more than once you know those that you
keep going back to so I think Dexter
Gordon was the first tenor player that I
properly properly was inspired by
obviously Coltrane Wayne like lots and
lots of saxophone players for a while
when I was younger I'd listen to like
only trumpet players which is quite
interesting I was just like fascinated
by the sound when I was like 12 13 so I
guess it comes from everything um
everything that you've ever listened to
you and yeah you're you're sound comes
out out of yourself yeah yeah mr. spiro
howhow is it to play with those cats
from yeah there's those spoken be spoken
in a British sing this is this has been
the the four shows that we've done
together have been very very special
experiences for me I think London and
Chicago have a lot of similar vocabulary
that we use there there's there's
elements of free jazz when you buy a
quoted and Ornette Coleman to in one of
the songs and it's like yeah there are
the the influences are very similar so
when I sit on the stage and we have new
BIOS compositions which are very open
compositions that cater to a maximum
level of connection between the artists
and and and a very special level of
improvisation it allows me to play more
freely than in almost any other context
so that's why I especially love playing
with this ensemble thank you and not to
mention one other thing because that's
not normally possible with people but
the players themselves are so listening
and supportive of each other when
they're execute
nice tunes like Sam and Dan and Nubia
all of them it's like their ears are
entirely open during every single moment
so we can go we went into a we took a
song that was in using a Phrygian scale
we made it major and then switch between
four different keys like repeatedly for
my entire solo when that was not written
we were just listening to each other and
following each other it's it's it's the
it's what I live for it to do this sort
of thing would you agree Sam and then we
want to hear your voices as well you
know hey would you guys agrees with what
he's saying yeah completely but he was
giving us compliments yes but you don't
want to disagree you don't want to
discrete on there yeah I completely
agree it's it's just one plane in the
buyers behind dessert
it's really open we don't say this too
much fine she's actually out one of the
few horn players that I felt I really
listened and tunes into the bass so it's
great fun huh oh you call it that I'll
say yeah it's cool
yes a real pleasure jumping into this
band for me as well I think it's been
lucky a bit over a year now for me so um
I just remember like every time before I
go into the show we're noobs I'm
thinking the first show we did she said
just keep keep your ears open and do you
you know so that's what I've been doing
ever since like trying to react to
exactly where was going on it's always
with such amazing and players as well
that right there responding with you so
it's it's really liberating free
environment for me I love that lovely I
think we can conclude on that happy note
everybody's happening yeah you know we
love playing together and we hope to see
you guys again here in their jazz
