At the time they were excusive and extremely expensive cars.
Their value finally dropped to nearly zero
As kid I could hardly understand how you could buy such an expensive car for so little money

My passion for cars, I think, I always shared with Roel
Roel had his crush on cars and I spent my time with Roel
So, when we bought this car...
... it was because of our passion for it
While at the same time we gain lots of contacts because of this car...
...I didn't expect when we started
De Tomaso was an Italian car manufacturer
In the late fifties the owner, Alejandro De Tomaso, came from Argentina to Italy
He had to leave, He was political refugee but came in with some money
He married a rich American lady
...and together they started in the carscene
Racingcars at first, Formula 2
Formula 3 and even Formula 1 in the seventies
In the sixties they started with the Vallelunga, the first production car
Followed by the Mangusta and the Pantera
The Pantera ws the best known of them. I think they built about 8.000 of these
Partially by a deal they made with Ford in the US
The Deauville was placed in the segment S-class, XJ...
...Jaguar XJ. It was blamed to be a copy of the Jaguar
That seems truth. It was a small manufacturer that, as I read somewhere, designed the car in only 18 months...
...and it is quite remarkable they managed to create this car in suc a short time
Even before we bought this car we visited De Tomaso
And first thing I noticed was the ackward atmosphere in the factory
Alejandro was not present anymore. He lived on a Hotelfloor in Modena
That was where he lived
He did not visit the factory but there was always the possibility he could
And we felt that during every visit
Until he died.
He dictated even from a distance, from the centre of Modena, what was going on in the factory
As you can see, this is a very luxury car
Fat leather seats, fat leather finishing
Firm pieces of massive wood
In terms of speed and performance...
They are real cool. A 4 doors sportscar
But they were not very good cars
This one was built in 1981...
Back then you could also choose for a S-Class 450 that was far less exclusive but in s much higher quality...
...for finishing, quality and reliability
But the experience was, at that time, hardly met
It is a car with a small turning radius, direct steering...
It develops severe speed on the highway. It has power
That is what you bought, back in 1981, for 128.000 guilders (€ 58.000 )
the purchase was kind of magnificent
Roel always serched Internet, books and magazines and found an add...
... there was a car, priced way out our budget but possibly in reach after some tough negotiation
The car was sleeping for about 12 years...
...hidden in a shed behind a mass of other cars
The owner was a big fan for these cars
And with the passion Roel was talking about the car and the passion I showed for this particular car...
...we could haggle a price within our budget
And then the renovation started
We started tinkering ourselves with the help of friends that assisted us in numerous ways
We did not encounter problems. We never had arguments about the color, changes, do's and dont's
Characteristic was, when we couldn't afford to ride it
So, we wanted to suspend it But suspension goes for 3 monthts minimum...
I I registred it to Roel or Roel 'sold'the car to me so we could ride again
That shows how confident we were on this

Nice detail is we had it signed by Tom Tjaarda, the designer for the Pantera but also the Deauville
Here he wishes us good luck for the restauration wich we are very proud of
It is quite a large car. A mass of almost 2.000 kg
But it has an extremnely small turning radius
We did some rally's where small cars like a Morgan had to reverse in a U-turn...
...while we were able to do the same turn at once
Some people drop their jaws when they see this car
Most don't see but the ones that recognise it...
... react like they have some spiritual experience
They turn around and stare
That's what this car does...
Just nothing... or extremely much... there is nothing in between.
