Alpha has, in some sense, been the catalyst for Assen Zoekt...
as it forms the foundation of the whole church.
My name is Rudolf Setz. I live and work here in Assen.
I am the pastor of Assen Zoekt.
And next to that I am a diaconal consultant of the Christian Reformed Churches in the Netherlands.
I am enthusiastic about Alpha because it shows what the church is meant to be.
How you can interact with one another, how you can eat together...
The way there is room for openness and vulnerability.
I think it's beautiful that people come home when they come to Alpha.
There isn't an expectation that you should meet certain standards.
But that you can just join and be yourself.
Alpha starts with eating together.
Next, we watch the Alpha Film Series together with the subject of the evening.
Then we continue talking about it in small groups.
It's a very simple concept, in combination with a weekend away.
This season we're running Alpha a bit differently. We're running Alpha in living rooms.
Right now, there are ten groups that are running Alpha.
What I think is great in Alpha is that people can join as a guest and then continue as...
a leader or helper in the small groups.
I think that's very important. About 50% of the team exists out of people who were guests the last time.
So that circulates. You don't have a permanent Alpha-team.
The beautiful thing is, is that while people are still searching for answers...
I still invite them to join. Because you don't need to have all the right answers...
but you can ask the right questions.
Someone who started Alpha sometime ago is Miriam.
I met her around eight years ago in Assen.
She's a very inviting person.
Through these last few years, a lot of people got involved with Assen Zoekt...
Because of Miriam, because of Alpha.
Alpha is a place for her to bring people to...
and where faith grows.
Miriam started Alpha as a guest...
She now runs Alpha and speaks regularly at her church.
She's currently giving an Alpha from home.
Assen Zoekt has grown from a few people to...
300 people. Alpha has played a major role in this growth.
Every time we ran an Alpha, with for example 20 guests...
we also saw 20 new people joining our church.
I often hear people wondering how they can implement Alpha in their church...
I would like to revert that question: how can you use Alpha and all its values for your whole church?
And to build your church on Alpha.
You could think about the relaxed atmosphere, eating together, expecting everything from the Holy Spirit...
Jesus at the center... certain things you can apply...
in being a church. Alpha is so defining in the culture of Assen Zoekt...
when we get a new pastor, we tell him to go to Alpha first.
When people from other churches come to join us...
We invite them to Alpha. Some say they already know everything...
but it's not about knowledge. When you join Alpha, you experience how the church is meant to be.
