good afternoon from the garden is the
end of April and I thought it would be
nice to do another harvest video since
we have not done one in a while
April is not the most abundant month in
the garden when it comes to crops
because most of the over winter
vegetables are finished or finishing now
and most of those that we are sowing
this year have not started cropping yet
so at first I thought that would not
really be enough crops to do a video
about but when I sat down and listed
everything that we are harvesting at the
moment I actually started worrying that
this video would turn out too long many
of the crops that we are harvesting now
are actually perennial crops and the one
that is most highly anticipated in our
household is asparagus
so let me take you to our asparagus bed
we have planted these plants two years
ago which means that this year is the
first year that we can start harvesting
previously in our previous garden we
have grown asparagus from seat and in
that case you have to wait three years
before the first harvest but it is
definitely worth it because as fergus
plants are very long-lived and you can
after that you can harvest year after
year the variety that we're growing is
called hind limb I will spell it on the
screen because it's a Dutch name that's
probably difficult to understand and
it's an all-male hit rate it means the
plants only the plants are only male and
therefore more productive this variety
in general is starts cropping early in
the year and it's very productive and it
can be used both for growing green
asparagus and for blanching we prefer
green asparagus but in case we want
blanched asparagus as well we don't
earth it up I just put a black bucket on
top of the plants
so that's a nice bunch of asparagus and
I know what we're having for dinner

another perennial crop that we're
harvesting a lot of now is rhubarb and I
think I have about dozen plants tucked
around all over it garden I like to grow
rhubarb close to fruit trees big house I
consider it a good mulch plant since we
only eat the stems of rhubarb and the
leaves are poisonous then I just snip
them off and use them as mulch around my
trees or other plants I always wonder if
we would get so excited about rhubarb if
it were not so early in the season but
since there's no fruit to be harvested
in the garden now rhubarb is very
welcome and we love making all kinds of
cakes and muffins and compote and pies
so many possibilities but if you have a
vague regard recipe let me know the
annual vegetables that we are harvesting
now are greens because those are
generally the fastest growing ones in
front of me is some spinach from my
spinach trial and if you want to know
the details about the sowing dates you
can watch my previous video when I
talked about where I talked about that
so I'll be harvesting some spinach both
here and in the greenhouse and behind me
is another trial and that's my leaf
mustard trial with 12 different
varieties of leaf mustard I'll give you
the details on the varieties in another
video but today I want to harvest a few
plants from every row for salad tonight
in order to thin the rows a little then
behind me is another salad plant that we
are eating a lot of now that is when
troopers lane or claytonia which is a
very hearty salad plant that sells those
politicaly in our garden I do not sew it
anymore and these plants are
overwintered but and you can see their
flowering running too
seat so they will not last much longer
but right now they are very enjoyable I
also like to add edible flowers to our
salads like this viola tricolor Johnny
jumps up this beautiful yellow they
always have like tricolor two flowers
with yellow white and purple and here I
have a little bit with different
varieties of primulas that ice that I
grew from seed the wild Primrose then
there's Lord Alfred I think and Lady
Agatha and oriental sunrise so I will
pick a few of these as well
we're also harvesting lots of perennial
herbs both for tea and for cooking like
mint
we used mostly for tea or lovage here
which is in my opinion herb that is too
little II used it has quite a strong
taste and it can be added to soups and
stews very easy to grow and it also when
it flowers it attracts beneficial
insects I also want to pick some sage
mainly for our daughter who has a sore
throat and sage is the best natural
remedy that I know of
to fight sore throat
and then there is a crop that appeared
spontaneously in our garden and it's
stropharia
mushrooms wine caps also known as wine
caps and we probably imported spawn with
wood chips that we used to cover the
ground underneath our fruit trees it's
kind of ironic because I know people who
are doing their best to grow them and
not succeeding and in our garden they
just sprung up all over the place but
even though I grew up foraging for
mushrooms I'm very wary of mushrooms
that I do not know so I was a little
cautious
I had the mushrooms confirmed the
variety confirmed by two different
mushroom experts and they both said it
was indeed stropharia
so it's time to start eating them and if
you have any recipes or any
recommendations on how to prepare them
please let me know I think this will be
enough for tonight because there will be
only two of us eating the mushrooms our
children are unfortunately not fans of
mushrooms the last thing I want to do is
pick a bouquet of flowers and then we're
done with harvesting for today

from the greenhouse irises picked at
pencil stage so cold so that means they
will open in the vase and a few tulips
