we begin with the ongoing fight against
the coronavirus the surge of the omicron
variant is not letting up the u.s is now
averaging over 700 000 cases and 1600
deaths every day and the cdc director
says we have not yet reached the peak
meanwhile new biden administration
coveted protocols for businesses with at
least 100 employees start today these
companies must require unvaccinated
workers to wear masks they also need to
know the vaccination status of each
employee and get proof the occupational
safety and health administration could
start issuing penalties for companies
that don't comply the supreme court is
weighing challenges to these mandates
along with mandates the country is
grappling with how to handle the omicron
surge in schools chicago public schools
have canceled classes for a fourth day
because of a standoff with the teachers
union
educators want better coveted protocols
in place before returning to the
classroom and in one north carolina
county more than 70 bus drivers are out
of work after testing positive for the
virus as a result students at certain
schools will take city buses instead of
the traditional yellow buses for at
least two weeks cbs's cbs news naomi
ruckum has more
the omicron wave sweeping the nation is
having a huge impact on americans who
are not yet eligible to be vaccinated
we're seeing a lot of hospitalizations
in those younger age groups where the
children are largely unvaccinated 5 to
11 as well where vaccination rates are
very low the cdc says an average of 824
children a day were admitted to the
hospital this past week we might even
just keep keep our 13 year old out of
class
and our four-year-old out of the
preschool
most likely next week because it's just
not worth taking a chance how much of
this is truly omicron causing bad lung
disease versus you just happen to have
it here in new york the city's new mayor
is insisting that schools stay open
despite the concerns of some parents
health officials say there are steps
that can be taken to protect children
the best thing that schools could be
doing right now is serial testing
federal state and local officials are
pouring in millions to expand testing
capabilities as demand for testing soars
testing is not only used for diagnosis
but also for prevention meanwhile the
supreme court is weighing whether to
stop president biden's vaccine or test
mandate for businesses with more than
100 employees the new rules go into
effect today but the government won't
start enforcing them until february 9.

i want to bring in dr mark klein chief
physician at new orleans children's
hospital dr klein thank you so much for
joining us as we just heard there's a
significant number of hospitalizations
and kids some aren't eligible for the
vaccine and some are but haven't
received it when you hear about what's
going on in chicago and other places
where teachers want more protections do
you think this should be a point where
we're looking more at testing children
or making sure that they stay home to
stay safe a lot of people are are
feeling as though myself included
confused about what the guidance should
be at this point
well thanks for having me jerica um you
know this is a tough one um you know
it's we're going back to school in the
middle of uh
the biggest surge yet in covid cases and
with more than 300 000 new cases being
identified in children weekly in the
united states it's hard to see how that
really is compatible with in-person
learning in most of the schools because
the mitigation measures to prevent
transmission of the schools just just
aren't there
so while we all favor in-person learning
over virtual learning the fact of the
matter is that in-person learning does
no one any good if if teachers are out
sick and and so many students are out
sick
and if it's uh done in an interrupted
fashion because of repeated quarantines
and lockdowns
what do you think ultimately is the the
solution then because we know there were
millions of dollars that were supposed
to help shore up these school districts
in preparation for another wave and
another wave and here we are again uh
where many parents are wondering do i
get to go to work um how will i be able
to stay home with my child and and
provide if every time there's another
surge uh children are forced to stay
home what do you what do you make of
that what do you say at this point
well again it's a very tough situation
you know
work could be done on schools around
ventilation and
serial
testing masking were mentioned
we don't know how much effect any of
these mitigation measures will have
where omicron is concerned
uh the fact is the kids were being
brought back to school right as omicron
was peaking
post holidays
and so the timing could not have been
worse
i i would have liked to have seen many
of the schools delay their opening for
just a couple of weeks i know it's an
inconvenience for parents but
i think it would have done more probably
to mitigate the number of new cases than
just about anything else
if this
wave
hits as fast as we're seeing and then
dissipates as quickly as we hope
then um perhaps just
just buying a little bit of time a
couple of weeks or three weeks
would have would have produced a
tremendous amount of value but
you know it is what it is at this point
schools have opened in most locales and
we're seeing a lot of them closing down
now and and reverting to virtual
learning and a lot of them as you said
they are staying open including new york
city as we just heard in the report uh
pushing to try to stay open and we were
once the epicenter of all of this
israel's health ministry says that
people self-testing at home should swab
their throat and their nose to increase
the chance of detecting omicron the fda
doesn't recommend this just yet they
simply say the instructions on the test
should be followed but what do you know
about the throat swabbing and its
effectiveness
yeah i haven't seen any data jericho and
you know this recommendation kind of
came out of the blue out of israel it's
not the way the tests were developed or
validated uh the fda doesn't recommend
it and so until the fda changes the
recommendation or the manufacturer or
someone else produces some data that we
can look at that says that it's superior
to nasal swabbing and that it's safe i
think we should stick with uh with what
we've been doing up until now which is
just nasal swabbing alone no no swabbing
of the throat yeah the the nasal
swabbing is painful enough i can't
imagine having to get my throat swabbed
every other day um but what about people
who get the booster yet are infected
with covid and don't know it is there a
risk there
no there really there really isn't um
you know the recommendation is that if
you know you have covid um you should
wait until your symptoms subside before
you take the booster butt but there
isn't any particular danger that we know
of to getting a booster and
if you if you happen to get it while you
are unknowingly infected with the virus
and starting this week some people with
weakened immune systems can get a fourth
shot in the united states what do you
see as the future of covet vaccine short
term will we continue to need a booster
every five to six months
well let's hope not we don't really know
yet what the durability of boosters will
be uh this is a very special population
that you're referring to these are
people who are on cancer chemotherapy or
you've had an organ or stem cell
transplant or who have advanced hiv or
on high dose steroids we know that they
respond less well to vaccination
and so there's a strong rationale there
for giving a fourth shot a booster
to boost their antibody responses
for people who have normal or healthy
immune systems we just don't know yet we
know that the booster does restore some
immunity that tends to wane over time
after the primary series of vaccination
we don't know yet how often
boosters will be needed or if they will
be needed on a repeated basis right
right and at a time when people are so
used to being able to get information
and things very quickly everyone wants
answers but knowing that this is still
very new in many ways we've been in it
for two years but still a lot to learn
