when
european colonialism of africa came to
an
end and control of africa was handed
over to africans
african leaders of the time faced a
critical
decision to keep the borders handed down
to them
or do away with or completely rearrange
them
obviously they decided to stick with the
borders as they were
as they are the borders in use today
take a look at this harvard university
1959 map of
africa it represents all the boundaries
of thousands of tribes and nations found
in the continent
realistically it is impossible to redraw
boundaries based on these many entities
we can see that the boundaries are far
from uniform
and we can at least understand why the
african leaders
unanimously agreed to keep european
drone boundaries
perhaps the clearest boundary within
africa
is religion it divides the continent
into a clear islamic north under
christian
south africa is among the most religious
places in the world
and while the continent is rich with its
own native beliefs and religions
more than 95 percent of africans
adhere to either the islamic or
christian faith i don't know about you
but i find it kind of
interesting to theorize sometimes with
each religion
having varying amounts of influence in
each of the 55 countries of
africa what if instead of a 55 nation
continent of africa
as we know it there was a reality where
all the christian countries united
to form their own country and all of the
islamic states
formed their own country what would
these modern day countries look like
and how would they affect the world as
we know it
something to note is that while there
are countries that are 99
christian or muslim there are also some
places
where there is an even split between the
religions
say for example nigeria is split right
down the middle
with 49 christian and 48 percent
muslim ethiopia has 62 percent
christian and 32 percent muslim
benin has 53 christian 23 percent muslim
and 18 voodoo and mozambique
has 56 percent christian 18
muslim and 17 percent are either
non-religious
or have traditional beliefs these
nuances
could definitely have an impact on
deciding which of the two separate
countries
a region will belong to nigeria for
example
with a population of 210 million
i put 102 million in the christian
country
and 100 million in the muslim country
and so on and so forth with every
country
throughout the continent this is how
the new map of the two separate
countries would look like
there is only one major denomination of
islam
called sunni islam spread throughout
africa
while christianity has three main
denominations
catholic protestant and ethiopian
orthodox
as countries these two would immediately
have
massive populations there are already
more christians in africa
than in any other continent therefore
the christian country would have a
population of
685 million people
while the muslim nation would have a
population of about
550 million both countries would edge
out the united states total population
but still fall behind china and india
nigeria would be the largest single
contributor to the numbers
in both christian and muslim countries
the size of the christian population in
nigeria alone
is already the largest on the continent
and is projected to double
by 2060. in addition
tanzania uganda and kenya are projected
to join the list of countries
with the top 10 largest christian
populations
replacing russia germany and china
nigeria is a unique case it is projected
to be home
to the third largest muslim and
christian populations
globally and will be the only country
on the list of top 10 largest
populations
for both religions therefore adding
huge numbers to our two hypothetical
countries
in terms of size both countries would
have
roughly the same land area at roughly 15
million square kilometers each
making them the second and third largest
countries
in the world much larger than canada
united states of and china but
a bit smaller than russia which at 17
million square kilometers
would maintain its spot as the largest
country
in the world across muslim africa
the largest city would be cairo in egypt
with a population of 20 million followed
by casablanca in morocco
with 4.3 million people meanwhile
in christian africa the largest city
would be lagos nigeria
with a population of 21 million followed
by kinshasa
in the democratic republic of congo with
14.5 million people
the language diversity in the two
countries
would be vastly different with christian
africa
having its dominant official language as
english
with 65 percent 23 percent french
8 portuguese 3 percent a maharik
and 1 other muslim africa
on the other hand would have a less
stratified language pool
with arabic at 77 percent
french at 19 percent and traditional
beliefs
at four percent the nominal gdp
of the muslim country would be 1.04
trillion u.s dollars but the christian
country
would have a much larger economy of
1.598
trillion u.s dollars this would make
christian africa the 13th largest
economy
in the world pushing brazil to the 14th
largest economy
but remain behind those of australia
russia south korea canada italy
france all the way to the top muslim
africa's economy on the other hand would
be smaller than spain
mexico and indonesia but it would dwarf
economies of netherlands switzerland
turkey
saudi arabia and iran
if we look at gross domestic product per
capita
which is the gdp divided by the
population
used as an estimate of purchasing power
the muslim country
would be at 2 306 u.s dollars
but due to its slightly larger economy
that of the christian country would be 2
395 u.s dollars
both figures placing the countries in
the low
middle income economy bracket
the capital city of christian africa
would most probably become addis ababa
ethiopia not because it's the location
of the african union headquarters
but because of a more fundamental reason
christianity spread to ethiopia even
before
islam existed in the 1st century a.d
and became a christian state during the
ancient kingdom of aksum
this makes ethiopia one of the first
religions in the world
to officially adopt christianity and the
only region in africa
to survive the expansion of islam as a
christian state
johannesburg in south africa would
essentially become the financial center
of the christian country
largely due to the split of nigeria to
christian and muslim regions
which would reduce its influence in the
country
therefore the south african city would
boast the largest economy
egypt's capital of cairo would make the
most sense to become the capital of
muslim africa
since it would be the most influential
because it's the single largest economy
and population kano the largest city in
nosa nigeria
would also have a strong bid for the
capital city
since it is the commercial hub of the
north of the country
following the split of nigeria into
christian north and muslim
south the country which is commonly
known as the giant of
africa would probably take the biggest
hit
in this arrangement there is so much
more that goes into uniting people to
form a country
and this hypothetical world would have
massive implications for africa
its people and the entire world
