welcome to the tour of the Catechism of
the Catholic Church I'm father Daniel
maeín pastor of st. John the Apostle
Catholic Church in Bloomington Indiana
and pastor of st. Jude the Apostle
Catholic Church in Spencer Indiana I'm
delighted to present part four of the
Catechism titled Christian prayer as you
recall the first part of the Catechism
was the profession of faith what we
believe the second part the celebration
of the Christian mystery how we
celebrate our faith through the
sacraments of the Church the third part
of the Catechism deals with morals and
the moral theology of the church how we
live so what we believe how we celebrate
how we live and now in part four how we
pray how we communicate with God how we
open our hearts to him and indeed the
Christian life is one that leads us
closer and closer to the Lord prayer is
both an indispensable part of the
Christian life and also its fruit
because when we are with the Lord in
prayer we are truly alive
we truly sense that the Lord loves us
that he cares for us that he forgives
our sins and that he gives us every
grace that we need to keep persevering
st. Therese of Lisieux the little flower
says prayer is a surge of the heart st.
John Damascene says prayer is the
raising of one's mind and heart to God
prayer is certainly a gift we are able
to pray because of the Holy Spirit we
view prayer the opening of our heart as
being a great gift from God a beautiful
image in the scriptures of Prayer is the
encounter of our Lord with the woman at
the well and throughout the centuries
the image of the woman at the well has
been described
as an image of prayer prayer being the
wellspring from which our life in God
flows prayer is a wonderful gift from
the Lord prayer is the encounter of
God's thirst with ours God thirsts that
we may thirst for him
prayer is a response to God's thirst for
us in all of her convents blessed Teresa
of Calcutta had inscribed near the
crucifix the words of our Lord spoken
from the cross I thirst those words are
a call to prayer those words are an
invitation from the Lord that he indeed
is thirsty for us he longs to be close
to us and we long to be close to him
like the deer that yearns for running
streams so my soul is yearning for you
my God prayer comes from the heart the
very center of the human person if our
heart is far from God the words of
Prayer are in vain the word heart in the
Bible means the very core of our being
the place where we find God the place
where our God speaks to us and we to him
it is the place of decision the place of
truth the place of encounters with God
it is the place of Covenant Christian
prayer is a covenant relationship
between God and man in Christ it is an
action of both God and the human person
an action that comes from both the Holy
Spirit and ourselves prayer is wholly
directed to the Father in union with the
human will of the Son of God made man
the Catechism describes prayer as a
communion that just as the father and
Son and Holy Spirit are in
the communion of the Blessed Trinity so
we are drawn into communion with God
prayer in the New Covenant is the living
relationship of the children of God with
the father his son and with the Holy
Spirit prayer is the habit of being with
God's presence and of being in communion
with him and this communion is always
possible because in Baptism we have been
united with Christ prayer is Christian
insofar as it is communion with Christ
and with his body the church
