>>INTERVIEWER: Alright, are we ready?
>>SUSAN PERKINS: I'm ready.
[MUSIC PLAYS]
[PHONE RINGS]
>>BILL PERKINS: Hello?
>>INTERVIEWER: Hi, is this Bill?
>>SUSAN PERKINS: I am Susan Perkins.
I am curator of microbiology here at the American Museum of Natural History.
>>BILL PERKINS: Hello?
>>INTERVIEWER: Hi, is this Bill?
>>BILL PERKINS: Yes, it is.
>>INTERVIEWER: Bill, if you are on a plane ride, or you're at a party and someone asks you what your
daughter Susan does, what do you tell them that she does?
>>BILL PERKINS: I don't have a clue.
[LAUGHTER]
>>INTERVIEWER: That's it? And then you just walk away?
>>BILL PERKINS: That's what I tell 'em.
But then it's a long story.
>>INTERVIEWER: From her research has she ever told you any hints or things about disease or parasites
that you've taken on board?
>>BILL PERKINS: Oh, every time I- every time I have a problem, she tells me what to take.
And it works.
All but this last time.
I had-
>>SUSAN PERKINS: Please don't say this.
>>BILL PERKINS: -diarrhea for 59 days in a row.
>>SUSAN PERKINS: Oh yeah.
I heard about it.
>>BILL PERKINS: She's the smartest girl I've ever come across and I'm so proud of her.
Warms my heart every time I talk with her.
She gives me fits because she's so smart.
She keeps my computer going great.
>>SUSAN PERKINS: I do.
>>BILL PERKINS: She knows how to fix anything electrical.
>>SUSAN PERKINS: Turn it off, turn it back on again.
>>BILL PERKINS: She's very considerate.
She's very thoughtful.
And she goes to places that I wouldn't even go close to because too many critters.
And she's been all over the world.
It's an unbelievable experience for her, I'm sure.
But she's always been very scientific and wants her questions answered correctly.
I can't even send her an email if it's got an incorrect statement in it.
Because she will send me back three pages of material that tells me, "This is the right
answer, Dad."
>>INTERVIEWER: What were some qualities that he instilled in you that you feel like have helped you
become a successful scientist or researcher today?
>>SUSAN PERKINS: You know, even though he doesn't have scientific training, you know, he notices which birds
are at the feeder, or in the pond.
Or, you know, insects, lizards, whatever.
He pays attention to that.
So, I like to think that that is a quality that I inherited of just being curious and
taking notice of things, being observant of those things.
Happy Father's Day, Dad.
I wish I was there in person with you.
