How to pronounce middle distance in English?

hey folks going on ironhammer here i'm
here with the what the puppers spaying a
little bit of time with the dogs outside
before I have to head off to Iceland for
the Reykjavik CrossFit Championships but
before that happens I wanted to take a
few minutes to tell you about an athlete
named caster Semenya who not a
crossfitter doesn't really have anything
to do with CrossFit directly I just
think it's a really interesting case
it's a really interesting story I think
it's something that should be a
conversation being had in all versions
of athletics and all sports because it
absolutely is pertinent to what's going
on around the world today and and here's
the story caster Semenya is is a South
African women's middle-distance Olympic
champion one of the best sprinters 800
meter distance runners of all time one
of the fastest women alive ever and she
has been at the center of a bunch of
different controversies not because of
herself but because of how the I double
aft sort of international governing body
of track and field has handled her
existence and here's what I mean by that
since the 2009 World Championships
semenya first sort of came under the
sort of scrutiny because she was accused
of being a male competing against
females and had to undergo some testing
in order to see whether that was the
case and that came out that she was
female but she has very high levels of
testosterone testosterone levels which
give her an advantage against other
women in sprinting but they are her
natural testosterone levels it's just
what she's got that she was born with it
was the cards that she was dealt and it
makes a lot of sense that having
testosterone would benefit her in a
sport that requires speed and power in
something like the 800 meter sprint in
fact when you think of peds generally
speaking PDS are some sort of exits and
artificial testosterones that that's the
exact reason why it's taken because it
helps with that sort of thing and so she
has now literally this just happened on
May 1st so yesterday she's now been
forced by the I double AF to to take
sort of medication to
bring her testosterone levels down and
this has been a long culminating process
basically the I double AF made a rule
which said that if you're a female
competitor and you have testosterone
levels above a certain threshold you
have to take medication to bring it down
below a certain threshold in order to
level the playing field with the other
female competitors she obviously and
rightfully appealed this to the CAS the
court of arbitration of sward those are
the same people that you know see
Appeals for things like drug suspensions
right so the CAS just ruled in the IWF
favor yesterday saying that that rule
requiring women with a certain level of
testosterone to take medication to bring
them back down to the specific threshold
they ruled that that rule is okay and
this is a huge problem there's a problem
which comes to really the heart of what
it is to be athletic what it is to be in
a sport what it is to be competing
against other people and trying to force
this equal playing field this level
playing field which is garbage it is a
terrible excuse to try and force an
athlete who has talents and drive and
abilities that other athletes do not
possess after the the the the possession
of which was not ill-gotten this is just
what she has to work with to force them
to essentially change their lives just
to be able to compete against other
athletes it's it's a sad sad and
brutally wrong in many many ways I mean
logically it doesn't even make any sense
because competition is not a level
playing field there's gonna be people
who have advantages when it comes to
certain sports certain events certain
tests and that's just part of the
process some of those advantages are in
very simply the way you're born some of
those advantages might be where you're
born or when you're born or what
environment you're raised in and if
you're gonna try to simplify someone
like caster Semenya is performance to
just one thing saying oh this is solely
because of her
her hormone levels are absolutely out of
whack with other women and therefore we
need to bring them in line with where
every other woman is simplifying that
takes away from what she's accomplished
what she does day in and day out to be
the best in the world at what you know
her sport calls for and it also is an
argument that makes no sense in that you
cannot level the playing field for any
other factor that could be causing an
advantage in specific sports nor would
you want to so I think this is a really
sad situation a situation where an
athlete a world-class athlete is being
wrongfully targeted and this is a
targeted thing because the IWF they
created this rule specifically and only
for middle distance runners so only
middle distance runners only women in
middle distance running are subject to
this if your testosterone was above a
certain threshold you have to take drugs
to bring it below certain threshold and
it opens a lot of big can of worms right
because the question is if you're taking
someone who has a very high testosterone
and giving them drugs to bring their
testosterone level down why shouldn't a
sleet's with very low testosterone be
allowed to take testosterone and bring
their levels up to that acceptable
threshold right there's no science
behind this there's no there's no real
thought behind this this is this is a
strange world that we live in where it
makes no sense for this sort of thing to
occur and it's it's happening there
isn't a lot that you know we can do here
I'm not creating this as like a call to
action what I'm creating this for is to
start a conversation to have a
conversation because this makes me feel
some really interesting feelings makes
me think some really interesting
thoughts about where the future of
athletics is going and by athletics I
mean all sports that have competitive
competitive events that are separated
between men and women or separated
between weight classes or separated
between skill level and professionality
I think there's arguments for each and
every one of those to sort of fall under
the
strange blanket of there's an advantage
somewhere and I think it's a really sad
time it's really really sad time that an
athlete like caster Semenya is being
targeted and a decision like this is
being made on an international level
because it is going to affect it will
trickle down because once a decision
like this is made and then the appeal is
confirmed that decision that sets a
precedent and so that's a really really
bad precedent a precedent that should
not have ever been set to begin with and
I really hope that other athletic
endeavors competitions divisions
governing bodies learn from this in the
opposite way they see it they see it for
the travesty that it is they see it for
the wrongness that it is doing to this
athlete and to other athletes that might
fall underneath its purvey and I think
that hopefully people learn and do not
make the same mistake and that somehow
someway caster Semenya can sort of
overturn this and get back to doing what
she does best and is the best in the
world at hopefully either way folks I'm
