imagine a commercial aircraft travelling
at some speed
usually they fly at altitudes of 35000
feet or more and at the speed of around
850 kilometers per hour
and then there are super fast fighter
jets which can travel even faster
generally in the range of 1500
kilometers per hour or more
when we look at these two examples the
only thing that distinguishes them is
the speed at which they travel
generally in aerodynamics and aircraft
studies we use a term called mach number
to denote the speed of an aircraft
so what is mach number
mach number is the ratio of speed of
body to the speed of sound in the
surrounding medium
speed of the sound at sea level is 125
kilometers per hour and speed of the
sound at 35 000 feet where the aircraft
usually fly is around 1063 kilometers
per hour
the speed of the sound varies with
temperature
as the temperature decreases the speed
of the sound also decreases
now to understand mach number and its
real life application consider a
commercial flight travelling at the
speed of 850 kilometer per hour at an
altitude of 35 000 feet
then mach number of the flight is given
as 850 divided by 1063
1063 is the speed of sound at 35 000
feet
mach number is approximately 0.8
so few commercial flights travel at mac
0.8 speed
most of the aircrafts tend to avoid mach
1 speed because aircraft experiences
high turbulence and will be difficult to
control near that speed anything below
mach 1 is called subsonic speed
between 0.8 and 1.2 mac it is called
transonic speed
and beyond 1.2 mac is called supersonic
speed
another fascinating example of mach
number is related to ultra fast jets
they travel at about 1500 kilometers per
hour
so when we calculate their mach number
it will be 1500 divided by 1063 it will
be traveling at 1.4 mac a supersonic
speed
other than aircrafts we observe bullets
fired from a gun travelling at the speed
of sound or more than that
so this is it about mach numbers it
gives us an idea of speed relative to
speed of sound
