We say hi to Virginie Viard. She's Chanel artistic director and Haute Couture is her turf.

The hairdresser is Damien Boissinot.
- Hi Damien. - How are you doing?
The hair at Chanel is always an important part of styling.
The hair stylist is present during all the fitting.
All the models are also made up, everything is impeccable,
like it shall be on the runway.
The Haute Couture braids are always small feats of inventions.
- What material is it? Are these mirrors? - Beads!
Look: They're sequins, beads etc., but it's like a caterpillar, it's all articulated.
There are also sparkles, faceted beads.
The geology of this tweed is super complex. How many threads here?
The Chanel pink, the Chanel black and white, they seem to have melted.
The braid is large, giving shape to the tweed jacket.
A Chanel muse herself, Mahany Pery in a tweed of feathers

This jacket took 2000 hours to make in the Lemarié ateliers.

Jill Kortleve wears a rather simple marinière, inspired I guess by the first Marinière done by Gabrielle Chanel,
a minimalist garment that was a revolution in a world of heavy maximalism,
a triumph of lightness in a universe of too muchness.
She walks like that, on the silver floor.
No embroideries here, a ribbon,
the softest Chanel produced muslin, lace, and voilà.
Nora Attal in the most colourful ensemble. Flowers and abstractions.
Abby Campion wears a tweed jacket designed to go above the almost crinoline.
Romantic shapes, pastel shades that come directly from the palette of colours
of a great painter Marie Laurencin.
Marie Laurencin is a painter born the same year as Gabrielle Chanel,
and they shared some friends like Jean Cocteau.
Karl Lagerfeld owned a few Marie Laurencin paintings in his art collection.
Marie Laurencin is famous for her use of pastel colours, just like here.

How is the shoulder this season?
This one is round. The shoulders were king size this year.
I see a nice story: A woman coming home in the night,
putting her man's jacket on her shoulders.
So, the shoulders are wide.
All around the coat there is a cord tool that underlines the threads of the coat.
- It's not a braid? It's a cord. - It's a cord.
What's the difference?
Cord is threads from the tweed that you twist
and then you put them all around the edge.
Like the braids but thinner.
It's inspired by a coat that Gabrielle Chanel wore, isn't it?
Exactly. Big volumes downwards that open to the skirt.
Evening dress and evening coat. Voilà.
There is a beautiful, embroidered skirt on Lesage embroidered organza.
It's a painting.
There is a coat on top lined in black. When you open the coat with the skirt inside,
it's like a jewel box, a museum inside the coat.
With a bustier inside, also in black satin.
Mona Tougaard wears a front panel of colours, Emeraulds, yellows, blacks, fushias.
The Chanel little black dress becomes this sublime piece of embroidery bravado.
And when you approach, you realise what looked almost severe, has actually quite a deep neckline,
a slash of skin in the garden, Eden and temptation is never far away.
And the black muslin is actually quite see through.
The Chanel black bow, as a belt to quiet things down.
All The premiere d'ateliers take care of their numbers,
seeing details the untrained human eye can't see.
This is the scoop of the season, Madame Jacqueline, the iconic Chanel Haute Couture head of atelier for tailoring is off,
a well-deserved retirement.
And she's replaced not by one but by two Heads of ateliers,
who used to be her seconds of atelier. Big deal!
Chanel now has 5 Haute Couture ateliers.
Meet madame Christine and madame Carole!
This is Louise De Chevigny. Close up of the tweed to see the two-tone woolen texture,
the braid made with the same threads, the big buttons in the same tones,
a similar veston underneath.
The satin belt of the skirt is laid in a similar V shape as the veston.
Large, bright, almost messy flowers burst violently on the tweed coat.
The coat is inspired by the dark utilitarian one worn by Gabrielle Chanel herself
as a young woman on the racehorse track fields.
A picture that inspired Virginie Viard. It's meant to make you gasp, and you gasp.

The skirt is not a bouquet, it's a field of embroidered flowers.

The braid is heavy, we don't need to put a chain. But for the code, for the image, we still put it.
- So that the customer can find her way around? - That's it! That's why it's thinner than other chains!
- Is this your first season? - It is.
I'm emotional, excited, anxious
I'm going through different emotions! I didn't sleep much. Now I feel better,
I hope it will continue like this for many years to come!
Congratulations! How long did you work together?
31 years we've known each other! When we met, we were seamstresses, firsthand at Chanel, 20 years!
20 years! At 20 we worked back-to-back.
In the same studio, back-to-back. We are the opposite of each other! Yin and Yang!
I'm the talkative one It's true!
LOIC: How does it work? You are the two première d'atelier?
We each have a studio but side by side.
We split Madame Jacqueline's studio in two?
Because we need two to replace her!
That's right! We have small teams and it's very good!
How did it go then?
At the beginning it was a bit stressful but then it went very well!
Virginie made us feel comfortable. It was very good!
And for you?
The same! The first days with Virginie were a bit stressful because we didn't know how to approach her
and then it went smoothly. She is a lovely person!
What do you remember about Madame Jacqueline?
The requirement! That would be my keyword.
- How can I clean it? - At the dry cleaner!
Someone specialised in Haute Couture? Not just any dry cleaner?
What's the complexity in this jacket?
The fabric. It's difficult because the fabric is quite thick,
and we had to make it thin so we tried to use something super light in it so it wouldn't be too heavy!
- How do you do it? - The techniques are secrets!
- You mash them for hours? - No, we don't.
We delicately sew the stitches. And we try to put light on things.
Pretty pockets, sewn with little stitches.
The little hands do it gently, little stitches all slid together.
There is a lot of work here.
There are beautiful shoulders and a braid from the braid studio.
The specificity of this suit is the stripe work.
Because the jacket must fit over a stripe! It must fit well!
So, we did some alterations on the mannequin to which it was assigned so that the jacket would arrive on a stripe!
If the jacket leans back, it cuts the stripe on the back and the front goes up. That was a lot of work.
Also, here the back is in one piece, there is no seam whereas it exists in the interlining.
That is to say that on the inside there is a seam, but we took the fabric and moulded it.
So double the difficulty.
There is a seam here but underneath the interlining! Then the fabric is moulded on top of this interlining.
It all fits, yes. If you put the sleeve next to the arm it matches.
And if I did that, it would be ugly!
It doesn't match! The stripes must match!
Her head is lost in flowers, looking more dreamy than ever,
Vittoria Ceretti, direct from a Marie Laurencin fantasy.
The headpiece comes from Maison Michel, another Chanel owned house.
She wears a dress of black and white lace flowers, des fleurs de guipures.
A bouquet of camellias that you will only see if you come closer, all made by hand,
with fringed mousseline bits and feathers, made with tools that you can't find anymore but at Lemarié.
Can I ask you what you thought of the hats?
Beautiful! They had floral details embroidered inside.
I could see them from underneath. Sublime!
And so elegant on the silhouettes with the ribbons falling down the back.
I loved the fuchsia ribbon, it was beautiful.
Really the contrast between the pastel tones and the more toned ones.
Fuchsia, white, black. Really sublime.
I loved it. The grace, the allure of the models, the music. Enchanting. That's the magic of Haute Couture.
Is there a Chanel Haute Couture walk?
Naturally you walk in a more sophisticated way because we are aware that we are wearing something very precious.
The walk is more sophisticated, there's a pride in wearing these designs.
Do you feel that the gaze of guests changes because you are in Haute Couture?
Yes, of course!
You can see that the look is attentive.
They are looking at the details closely.
I think the person watching the show wants to get close to the clothes.
So, you feel that the look is more intense.
What is your favourite dress from the show?
Oh la la, it's complicated but the first marinière,
I think that's particularly touching.
Amanda Sanchez always seems the most relaxed before taking off,
while others like Blesnya Minher feel more nervous.
This colour is called céladon in French. It is typical Marie Laurencin,
I tried to translate the word céladon and the automated translator proposed “heavenly”.
What are you doing?
We change the knot because we think it's too small.
It's a fitting knot but we'll make a real one!
I wonder if it can be longer! We must see how it looks when she walks.

- What did you think of the colour of this show? - The colours of the show.
Well, they were all kind of soft sort of impressionist Monet colours. Incredibly pretty!
I loved this sort of blushing pink bride and that shot of kind of rather strange yellow.
And of course, I loved all the pinks and mauves and iris blues.
It was very interesting seeing the girls lined up inside the exhibition
because you can really see some dialogues between the 1920s and 1930s pieces and Virginie's collection. It's wonderful.
I thought it was so beautiful I loved the colours. I love that the flower petals were the same colours as the robe de mariage.
I loved the colours, it was really beautiful and how Virginie put them together!
I liked the colour. Especially with my skin colour, I only wear this!
So, I thought it was very beautiful! There was a very strong fuchsia, one of my favourite colours that I saw throughout the show.
How did you feel when the bride walked by?
I felt like I was in her shoes, and I wanted to get married now!
I would have liked to be there to catch the bouquet, but I missed it...
But it was very beautiful and even at the end when the rose petals fell from the sky, it was so magical, it was so beautiful!
It was sublime, magical! It's my first Haute Couture show!
What was it like to see an Haute Couture show for the first time?
It's like a fairytale! It's so beautiful.
You can feel the luxury more than you can see it! Everything is hidden in the almost invisible details.
Never ostentatious, is it?
