- Contractor: the bridge player in contract bridge who wins the bidding and can declare which suit is to be trumps
- Asserter: someone who claims to speak the truth; "a bold asserter"; "a declarer of his intentions"; "affirmers of traditional doctrine"; "an asseverator of strong convictions"; "an avower of his own great intelligence"
- The person who makes the highest bid. Declarer, by winning the bid, earns the right to name trump, to receive cards from his or her partner, and to lead to the first trick.
- Plays the cards for the offense. Is chosen by virtue of having first named the strain that eventually determined trumps.
- The person who first bid the suit named in the final contract
- The person who plays the hand in the partnership that wins the contract; by the rules, the declarer is the first player in the partnership who had called the final denomination in the bidding stage. The other partner becomes the dummy.
