here's five more reasons on top of the
four I gave you last time why your fruit
tree may not be producing fruit stay
tuned it's winter it's a good chance to
see why your fruit tree may not be
producing fruit we're in Canada plum
trees never lack chilling so that's one
reason your tree needs a chilling
requirement Lisa it's gonna chill out
well it needs to be sufficiently cooled
so that the buds on this fruit tree
don't say oh no it's still fall
no it's still fall and then spring comes
along and it says no we haven't seen
winter yet so we're not gonna open our
buds to flower that is a problem we saw
that in the South of France where some
years they've had such warm winters that
the plum trees never even bloomed that
gets to be a problem so chilling
requirement is usually a certain number
of hours below a given temperature for
them to properly be chilled so that when
the warmer weather comes they go okay
I've had winter and now I can open my
flowers so if you're in the southernmost
range for a fruit tree that you have
know if you're in the warmest range in
the States it would be in the
southernmost range if you're trying to
grow it but you're kind of on the edge
of where it will grow successfully some
years when the winter has been
particularly warm you may not have that
fruit tree flowering we don't have that
problem but it could affect you if
you're on the limit of where that tree
can grow another reason relating to
winter is if you have particularly cold
winter your
flower buds might actually freeze you'll
get that here with something like
peaches and cherries
well actually peaches here the flower
buds don't freeze the whole tree freezes
and dies but that's a different story
you may be at the limit of where that
tree can grow in the coldest part of its
range so you see the previous one was
the warmest part but if you're trying to
push a certain tree and you say oh I do
want to grow peaches and nectarines but
you're kind of at the very limit the
tree may survive but the flower buds may
freeze so you say well my tree grows
every year it's growing but it never
flowers or it only has flowered once in
five years you're pushing the very limit
of where that fruit tree can
successfully overwinter flowers to
therefore flower in the spring so their
range is the you get you get the donut
effect you get the very edge and in the
middle you want to be in the middle of
the donut you want to be where that is
gonna work
every year but if you're trying to skim
around the edge of the donut then some
years colder if you're in the know
coldest part of the range the cold may
affect the flowering and if you're in
the southern limit or the warmest limit
then you may not get enough cold so
that's two of the less common but that
happens reasons why your fruit tree is
not producing fruit talking about cold
where you locate your fruit tree can
have a big effect because even though
you say well the catalog says that that
fruit tree can grow in zone 7 yes the
catalog says and you say I look at the
map and I'm in zone 7
yes but you might be on average 7 but
the microclimate of your exact property
or a part of your property might be zone
6 say how can that be well there are
micro climates any time the landscape
the topography the hill enos changes you
will have warmer spots mid slope
so if you imagine a mountain the coldest
places will be at the very top and the
very bottom if you flatten out the
mountain this is where most fruit trees
that you're trying to grow in the flat
below a mountain this is where they
freeze especially if it's a valley so
you get going down and then going up
that is that spot right there
is not where you want to grow fruit tree
if you say yo that's exactly where I am
right cuz it's along the stream or along
the river hmm
sorry but unless that River is really
big enough to give you a microclimate by
warming the area all the cold air will
go down cold air drops you ever see in a
house you say well you know if you're
heating and you stand up on a chair you
go oh it's warmer up here and if you lie
down on the floor you say oh it's cold
down here
well the same thing happens in the
landscape so where you have a mountain
and a valley this spot avoided you say
well that's where I am no do you have
any part up here if you don't then maybe
by a place up here or ask a neighbor
that's up here to grow your fruit trees
if you're in a frost pocket you may lose
your flower buds almost every year
because the cold air goes down when you
have one night of
it will go down and I've seen situations
where the tree was just in a spot where
it's just high enough that maybe the
bottom half of the tree and we had that
one year happened in 2012 where we had a
big frost during bloom and the only part
that didn't freeze was way up there the
top top branch didn't freeze everything
below that had accumulated enough cold
that those flowers all froze so being in
a microclimate that freezes is another
reason why your fruit tree may not
produce it lives it flowers but the
flowers don't succeed because they
freeze so that's three reasons now if we
transport to spring there is one more
reason that really never happens in our
climate because when you get to a colder
climate when spring comes bang it comes
it's everything is compressed plants can
afford to oh I think maybe I'll flower
next month no that doesn't happen and I
really see this in France they say yeah
we get flowering starting in February I
think what February February it's snow
and it's gonna be snow in March and even
we'll get snow in April but if you're in
a warmer climate you can have sometimes
a flowering period that extends 20 30
days for the same species that can be a
problem our flowering if I take Apple
for example well Apple will flower here
in a very tight window that's usually 10
days that's it it's 10 days so between
the very first cultivar some people say
variety go see that video cultivar
variety the very first
to flower if it flowers for five days
between the first bloom and last and the
very last cultivar to bloom of that
species so let's say the earliest
earliest Apple to bloom and the very
latest Apple to bloom if they each only
bloom then it's more than five days it's
more like eight days they flower but
even if they were five days see the
first five days in the last five days
there would still be a period here in
the middle where they would overlap and
so the pollination can cross between the
two if the conditions are right you'll
see that first video the four reasons in
our climate that really doesn't happen
that you had one that's too early in the
season and one that's too late and the
two don't meet but if you're in a warmer
climate and you're in a spot where wow
the season goes on for a month you can
have the very earliest one even if it
blooms for ten days and then you get the
very latest one that even if it blooms
for ten days but you see in the middle
never the two shall meet so that can be
a problem and that can be a reason why
you're not producing fruit the two trees
or the two cultivars you have don't
overlap in their flowering period and
that's what you need you need viable
flowers in the beginning and you need
viable flowers in the end and you need
the temperature to be right go see the
catalogs usually should tell you and
your nursery person should know that wow
this one's very early and this one's
really late and so you want to get one
in the middle you see that if you had an
early and a lake and a middle one in
between everybody's covered oftentimes
you want to use in apples just use a
crabapple it flowers for a long period
and they're usually midseason ask your
supplier ask you're not even garden
center but ask
your nursery person who has been selling
you these trees if these two cultivars
will pollinate it gets a little trickier
so that's how many reasons that's
two three
three more reasons it gets a little
trickier with something like pair at
plums because now you say well they're
all plums yes but there's three types of
plums
there's European plums which are the
blue generally the blue plums
then there's Japanese plums which are
generally the reddish or purple plums
and then there's the American plums
which are the native plums so you have
three different types of plums and you
say well I have two plum trees yes but
if one is a European and one is a
Japanese hmm
they may not pollinate but if you have a
Japanese and on American they may not
pollinate if you have a hybrid that's
where it even gets more complicated
because the hybrid is a mix of two so
you might have a Japanese and an
American hybrid so if you have the
hybrid it will pollinate the Japanese
the Japanese and the American same thing
if you have a hybrid between a European
and an American it will that hybrid will
pollinate either one I told you this
gets to be the less common but it
happens so make sure when you look most
good catalogs will give you these
details will say you need a another
European if you're buying a European
plum you need another cultivar of a
European plum to get proper pollination
or if you're growing Japanese plums you
need another cultivar of a Japanese plum
to pollinate that's a look at the less
common but the ones that occur reasons
and so I think with these two videos you
should figure out why your fruit tree is
