performing middle performing and high
performing students
as these three graphs show
low performing students struggle to move
beyond the remembering level of thinking
middle performing students tend to
operate at the applying level of
thinking
and high performing students operate at
the analyzing evaluating and creating
levels
these educators assessment reflects
research that suggests students with the
same cognitive abilities may have
drastically different metacognitive
abilities powering their thinking
this means that enhancing students
metacognitive skills is critical to
achieving more equitable academic
outcomes
so the first three levels of operation
are important
but students will need to operate on all
levels if they are to excel on
cognitively complex academic work and be
prepared for high-paying jobs
the analyzing evaluating and creating
modes of thinking are where the most
valuable academic and professional work
is performed
in the fourth row last column we see
that the value of the analyzing mode of
thinking more than doubles in value of
the previous level
this large jump in value is to convey
the significance of crossing this
threshold of thinking
you produce outcomes at this level when
you scrutinize information detect
nuances patterns inconsistencies and so
forth with material covered in class
or
as homework
the second column shows the thinking
skills that powers this type of mental
work
and if you track back to the first
column you see the metacognitive
conditions that trigger you to think on
this level
analyzing thinking would involve
pondering how multiple academic elements
are similar and how they are different
and distinct
students who consistently use their
analyzing skills perform well in
cognitively complex courses likewise
jobs that require high loads of
analytical work
typically pay well
analyzing and evaluating have a special
relationship
so let's look at evaluating and then
i'll show you how these two skills
reinforce each other
on the fifth row last column
we see that the evaluating mode of
thinking doubles the value of analyzing
the evaluating outcome deals with making
decisions in judgments based upon your
analysis
so the analyzing and evaluating skills
go hand in hand
because we analyze to evaluate
another way of saying this is that our
evaluations are based on our analysis
for example when you wake up in the
morning you use your analyzing skills
when you go through your clothes
as you consider all the factors that
affect what you should wear you are
conducting an analysis but as you make
your decision you move from analyzing to
evaluating
in my class when we contemplate all the
factors and situations of a case study
we are analyzing when we decide we have
evaluated
the reasons you hate my tests that ask
you to choose the best answer or take a
position on something or defend a
position is because they require you to
analyze and evaluate
these skills are critical for students
to develop
because their decisions will determine
their directions in life
if they analyze and evaluate effectively
then they can expect to have a rewarding
life
in the second column we see the mental
work associated with evaluating
in the first column to trigger the
evaluating mode of thinking you would
have to approach your work contemplating
how to make the best decision or what is
the best course of action
practically every employer is looking
for employees with sound judgment
from a medical professional who can
analyze confusing and confounding
symptoms to determine the best treatment
option to an accountant who can analyze
tax codes and financial documents to
determine the best course of action for
a client
into a computer engineer who can analyze
and evaluate a business's network to
optimize their computing systems
performance
finally in the fourth column in the
final row we see a huge leap in the
value of this skill
in the third column we see that the
creating outcome emphasizes originality
the second column shows that the
creating mode of thinking empowers you
to develop fresh perspectives and
interpretations of events
to arouse this mode of thinking
you would need to be in a state of mind
where you were trying to merge concepts
or ideas together to form a new use or
perspective
the creating mode of thinking is highly
valuable for students employees and
entrepreneurs
operating at this level requires that
you have fully analyzed and properly
evaluated information first
in school this would entail work like
building a modern interactive website
for a client
or writing a paper on ways to improve
your neighborhood or
mapping out your career path
in the working world creating thinking
powers small innovations such as
improving a process in a business that
reduces undesirable tasks and major
innovations such as creating a new way
to shop that creates an entirely new
market
one of the hallmarks of operating at the
bottom three levels of the diagram is
that there are no easy right or wrong
answers everything depends on the
quality of analyzing evaluating and
creating thinking you invest in the work
this is a key distinction between the
more simplistic work represented by the
first three rows of the diagram and the
more sophisticated work reflected by the
bottom three rows of the diagram
after dr phillips helped students
differentiate their thinking skills he
noticed that the class discourse was
richer students performance was much
higher and
because students were doing their share
of the cognitive work dr phillips was
invigorated rather than exhausted after
teaching
so let's do a quick recap
getting students to analyze opens an
entirely new world of operations for
students
